October 2021 Newsletter – Community events and Fundraisers coming up!

We’re partnering with the Collierville Schools Elementary School PTAs for Family Literacy Day on Nov. 7. We’ll be there to share information about our programming and what it means to help every child read successfully. All are welcome to attend. Please RSVP so our PTA members have lots of materials!

Our ESOL students will have a potluck End-of-Semester lunch on Nov. 17. All are welcome! Please contact Sinaria for more information.

On Dec. 11, we will have a Pop-Up Reading from 10-12 at Carriage Crossing. We’ll read books about all of the winter holidays, meet Santa, and have hot chocolate.

Fundraising this Giving Season Our fundraising events allow us to serve the community, provide scholarships for students, and continue to offer community events. On Nov. 11 – Nov. 15, we’re having a virtual silent auction. You’ll be able to see some of the larger items at our office but bid online safely. More information and link will be available!

On Nov. 26 – Nov. 30, we’re hosting Round Up for Reading, where you can help us by simply rounding up your holiday purchases to the nearest dollar. You’ll simply register a card at the secured Round Up app, and authorize the app to round up purchases to the nearest dollar. So, if a purchase is 10.80, we’ll receive the .20 extra. It’s an easy way to give, and every few cents add up to supporting programming and services!

This holiday season, you also can order holiday cards on behalf of your clients, family, or friends, and share your passion for literacy at the same time. We’ll even hand-address and send the cards for you!

Global Tea – sharing teas and sweets from around the world Our ESOL students, staff, and volunteers came together to share teas and traditional foods from their home countries. Moroccan, Indian, Mexican, Columbian, and Palestinian foods and teas were some that we were able to experience. While teas and foods were different, we learned that teas and foods brought people together around the world.

December 2021 Newsletter – Thanksgiving celebration, volunteering, and Matching

Season’s greetings to you and yours!

From all of us at the Collierville Literacy Council, thank you for being a part of the CLC’s mission to empower people and enrich communities through literacy.

It’s because of you that our building isn’t a space to simply give out books. The CLC is a home for people to learn safely, meet their goals, and share what they learn with their family and community.

We are looking forward to a bright new year with you!

Thanks to a grant from All State – Carrie Moore (pictured with Program Manager Sinaria El Hassan), our English Speakers of Other Languages experienced a traditional American Thanksgiving. Students shopped, cooked together, and enjoyed a meal with our volunteers, teachers, and supporters.

Thanks to our volunteer Cathy Bertram, who prepared and served the turkey, and for our students for sharing their own additional touches, like hot mulled apple cider.

“Living the experience of preparing for a Thanksgiving meal felt so much fun,” student Hanady Soboh said. “Cooking something new felt so exciting especially when we loved the result. Now, I love Thanksgiving. It brings me warm feelings sharing all of this delicious food.”

This holiday, we’re still reading together! Here, one of our tutors shares materials with a parent to discuss. Please share how you’re listening to stories and podcasts, talking about family recipes or stories, watching a movie with the subtitles or captions on, and reading together on our social media pages.

You may see Odelia Laor in our office. Odelia is new to Memphis, and to the US, and she’s volunteering with us to rebuild our website.

You may also have bid on an item in Shop for the Season, Shop for the Cause online auction, sponsored by Maureen Fraser, John Green & Assoc., and Dr. Tommy Whited. We raised $6,435 from the auction. Thank you to our sponsors, the businesses who provided items, and our bidders for your support!

We have a match for your holiday gift towards scholarships!
